In June students of the Viking Explorers ROV Team from the Electrical Department under the guidance of Scott Fraser competed in the MATE ROV competition at Memorial University in St. John's Newfoundland, Canada against teams including MIT and other major universities. The team finished higher than any other U.S. college or university.

The team placed 5th overall and brought back multiple awards.

Previous competitions have been held at NASA Houston at the Neutral Bouyancy Lab in 2005 and 2006. The 2004 compitition was held at UC Saanta Barbara.
