About the Program

 

FIRST TIME STUDENTS:

The Electrical Technology Program is approved by the California Apprenticeship Council. In order to work, students must maintiain enrollment in a minimum of 150 hours of classes per year. This is the equivalent of two 3 hours classes per semester.

We have a day and a night program. The content is the same, the night program has been broken into smaller pieces to allow for full time day work and part time night school.


First time students to the Electrical Program are required to complete the ten steps below in order to register for electrical classes here at Long Beach City College. Please follow these steps carefully. There is help available at each step of the way.

Registration Steps

1. Make sure you have a valid email address.

2. Every student is required to have a student ID before they can register in classes. This process can take place now before registration opens. Apply to LBCC at Admissions and Records.

3. Wait 24 hours and call (562) 938-4485 or go to LBCC Admissions office and obtain a LBCC Student ID# and Password

4. If you are a current High School Student in the Long Beach Area, you can sign up for Early Bird online at LB Promise Signup

5. All students are required to complete the Assessment and Orientation process before they will be allowed to register for any classes. Visit the Assessment and Orientation Page.

6. Sign up for assessment and orientation at Assessment and Orientation Signup and complete both processes

7. Sign up for the Electrical Department Orientation Session. New students must attend one.

8. Attend the Electrical Department Orientation Meeting

9. Register for the classes with the permission numbers obtained at the orientation meeting.

10. Attend your classes starting on 8/27/2012


At the Electrical Orientation, students will be provided with

  1. An overview of the program
  2. Description of the classes and order to take these classes
  3. Requirements for the certificate and degree
  4. Placement into the proper electrical math classes.
  5. Course substitution process for any electrical classes completed elsewhere.

At the orientation meeting, all students will be required to complete a 50 question on-line electrical math test. Students should bring a calculator for use in the test.

Any student who has completed a college math class should bring an unofficial transcript of that class for evaluation at the orientation meeting.

Any student who has completed electrical classes elsewhere, should bring an unoffical transcript for evaluation at the orientation meeting.

Checklist for the Electrical Orientation Session

  1. Arrive 15 minutes prior to the start time. A one day parking permit is required on campus. There is no off campus parking or metered parking. There are permit dispensers in the parking lots. See the map for the location of the permit dispensers.
  2. Bring your student ID number.
  3. Bring a copy of unofficial transcripts for any college math class
  4. Bring a copy of unofficial transcripts for any college electrical classes
  5. Bring a working calculator

ELECTRICAN CERTIFICATION AND ELECTRICAL TRAINEES:

Long Beach City College Electrical Program has been approved by the California Apprenticeship Council as "Approved School Number 101". The California Apprenticeship Council affirmed the January 1, 2006 deadline for certification for general electrician, residential electrician and fire life safety technician.

1. All students must go through the orientation process detailed above.

2. Register for the Electrical Classes once you have a permission number provided to you in orientation.

3. Attend the class and maintain enrollment

4. Fill out the Electrical Trainee Verfication Request Form that is provided in class.

5. Turn the Request Form back in person to Stuart Hively or Fred Heldberg.

6. At the completion of the "census date" you are considered an official student and and be provided with a verification letter. The letters are available approximately 6 weeks after the start of the semester.

7. Return to Stuart or Fred to pick up the letter.

8. Mail the letter, the completed Electrician Trainee application and your check to cover the fees to the address on the application. (LBCC is Approved School #101)

9. If you drop the class or do not continue your enrollment the following semester, the DAS will be notified and your trainee card will be revoked.

ELECTRICAN CONTINUING EDUCATION:

All ELECT and CISCO classes listed apply to DAS Electrician Trainee education requirements and continuing education requirements for Electrician Certification.

STUDENTS TRANSFERRING FROM OTHER PROGRAMS:

Many students inquire about transferring from other private or community college electrical programs. In many cases credit can be given for community college classes. Credit by exam is available for the entry level electrical classes for those who attended a private training program. This will be covered in the orientation process.
